Year Incorporated: 1986
How is it governed? United Way of Tulare County is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors comprised of local individuals representing a cross-section of Tulare County.
Service Area: Tulare County
How is it funded? Administrative and fundraising expenses are supported through campaign proceeds, fundraising events, grants and other sources. Administration and fundraising expenses average 15 percent of all funds raised.
How are funds raised? Approximately 90% of United Way funds are raised in the workplace through payroll deductions. Corporations, businesses, individuals and foundations make other donations.
Who may apply for funding? Any not-for-profit organization meeting United Way's affiliation guidelines may apply for funding.
How are organizations selected for funding? Organizations participate in a review process that includes a written application and site visit by United Way volunteers. The application contains a budget, description of programs, goals and objectives, planned use of United Way funds, audit report, and an agency's past performance. Based on this information, and other important variables, the Resource and Development Committee will recommend, or not recommend, funding to the board of directors. Organizations are allocated a specific annual amount, which is paid to them quarterly. Organizations receive designated contributions in addition to their general fund allocation.
