Agricultural Worker Health Initiative
A Comprehensive Approach to health
The health and living conditions of California’s agricultural workers and their families have been a priority of The California Endowment for the past several years. Since 1997, The California Endowment has undertaken a series of efforts to gain a broad and deeper understanding of the health conditions affecting this vulnerable population, and of the barriers to accessing health care services.
These efforts have lead to the development of the Agricultural Worker Health Initiative (AWHI), a five-year comprehensive strategic initiative for agricultural worker health. The AWHI aims to achieve optimal health for agricultural workers, their families and communities. The AWHI defines health as going beyond health care services and involves all aspects of the community including social, political, economic, cultural, housing, and environmental factors.
